Carnitine is a non-essential amino acid derivative your body uses to transport long-chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane — where they get oxidized into energy (ATP). The science
How carnitine actually burns fat.
Fat doesn't burn itself. It needs to physically enter your mitochondria first. Carnitine is the gate.
Free fatty acids enter the cell.
When you exercise, lipolysis releases fatty acids from your fat stores into your bloodstream. They reach your muscle cells.
Carnitine binds them.
Inside the cell, carnitine attaches to fatty acid molecules — they can't enter the mitochondria on their own. The combined molecule (acyl-carnitine) crosses the inner mitochondrial membrane.
Beta-oxidation kicks in.
Inside the mitochondria, the fatty acid is broken down through beta-oxidation — generating acetyl-CoA, which enters the Krebs cycle and produces ATP (cellular energy).
Carnitine recycles.
After delivery, carnitine returns to the cytosol to grab another fatty acid. The cycle repeats as long as you're demanding energy through movement. Without movement, the demand doesn't exist — carnitine alone does nothing.

Will it help me lose fat without exercise?
No. Carnitine enables fat oxidation, it doesn't force it. Without exercise demand, the fatty acids it shuttles into mitochondria just stay there. You need consistent training for any fat loss effect.
Best time to take it?
30–45 minutes before training, especially fasted cardio. The body is primed to use fat as fuel in a fasted state — carnitine maximizes that effect.
Can I stack with caffeine?
Yes — caffeine increases fat mobilization, carnitine increases fat transport into mitochondria. They're synergistic for fat-loss protocols.
How long until results?
Endurance benefits within 1–2 weeks. Fat composition changes over 8–12 weeks of consistent training + diet.
Side effects?
Well tolerated. Some users report fishy odor at high doses (a metabolic byproduct). Stick to recommended dose.
